Are you interested in kayaking God’s Pocket? Let us share with you our typical days here. We spend 6 days and 5 nights surrounded by the natural beauty of Vancouver Island and its coastal wonders.
Within the first two hours of paddling, we leave behind Port Hardy, the last community on Vancouver Island, and enter a world of green forests, rocky shorelines, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. As we paddle on it is as if we’re enveloped in a sense of tranquility, truly disconnected from the outside world and we become ever present in the moment.
Each night, we arrive at camp, sometimes staying in one place and sometimes moving on, to explore other camp areas. Over the course of our trip, we typically camp in three different locations. It’s a humbling experience to realize that all we need is right here with us. Life becomes beautifully simple. We rely on nature in many ways to provide for us, whether it’s freshwater from creeks, seafood from the sea, or insights from the sky about the weather ahead.
Our mornings begin with coffee and breakfast, followed by a paddle. Some days, we explore the intricate ecosystems of the intertidal zones, while other days may include up to 10 nautical miles to new campsites, or we may have a possible rest day exploring the surrounding forests if the weather tells us to stay put.
One of the unique aspects of this area is the solitude on the water. It’s rare to encounter other paddlers. The currents here can move fast and it is important to understand when and how they move. As guides we calculate the options carefully each day and make several plans, as alongside the currents, the sky also has a story and the winds can nudge us into changing our plans. Luckily, there are usually many great travel options, and with many years of experience in the area, we have a deep understanding of the localized systems.
Wildlife abounds in this unique environment. From Black Bears foraging along the shoreline to wolves howling, each encounter with nature is a reminder of the rich biodiversity of this region. And of course, there are the marine mammals – Stellar Sea lions, Harbor Seals, Humpback Whales, and occasionally, the majestic Biggs Killer Whales – all adding to the magic of our journey.
Lunchtime offers a chance to refuel and connect with our fellow travelers, whether they’re strangers or friends and family sharing this adventure with us. Meals always taste the best outdoors. A small break after lunch and we will typically continue on for our afternoon paddle.
The myriad of islands, the upwelling of cold waters that entice so many marine species here, and the midden beaches demonstrating village sites spanning thousands of years are just a few of the highlights to be experienced. I’m always amazed by nature’s ability to surprise us on trip. Whether it’s a chance encounter with a breaching whale or a mesmerizing sunset over the ocean, there’s always something to captivate our senses and remind us of the wonder of the natural world.
As evening falls, we gather for another meal, enjoying the warmth of a campfire under the starry sky. Camping on the earth (of course with a thick air mattress between us), is one of the most reassuring places that I can be where I truly feel my soul and body connect with the universe. We are lulled to sleep from a wonderous day, belly and soul full and await the next day’s adventure.
We make the planning easy by sending you information on packing lists, how to dress for your kayaking adventure, where to stay before and more.
